We foster artistic creation, experimentation, and connection through dance and community-based creative practices.
Colectivo Las Lajas is a grassroots dance initiative based in Limón 2, Popoyo, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. We foster artistic creation, experimentation, and connection through dance and community-based creative practices. We want to create an accessible and inclusive space where children, young people, and adults can explore movement, develop creative skills, and participate in collective creative experiences.
The project emerged from a collaboration between artists working in dance, circus arts, and craftsmanship, together with members of the Limón 2 community. Today, we continue to develop programs that bring together local residents, visiting artists, and people from different cultural backgrounds, encouraging exchange, collaboration, and shared creative processes.
Why are we here?
Popoyo is a coastal area shaped by rural communities, tourism, and an increase in international population. While the region offers many opportunities for recreation and outdoor activities like surf, access to artistic education and spaces for creative exchange remains limited.
We see dance as a valuable way to respond to this context creating opportunities for children and young people to develop their creativity, offering a space for expression and connection, and bringing together people who might otherwise have few opportunities to meet.
Through our programs, we hope to contribute to a more connected and culturally active community, where artistic experiences are accessible and different forms of knowledge, movement, and expression can coexist.
